AB roller

An AB roller is a compact workout gadget designed to strengthen your core, torso, and abdominal muscles.

Also known as an AB roller or AB wheel, the name comes from the abbreviation “AB” for “abdominal.” In other words, it’s like a belly or abdominal muscle roller or wheel.

Like many workout tools, there’s a variety of AB rollers out there. These variations can differ in material, size and number of wheels, width of the running surface, and weight capacity. So, it’s crucial to do some research before you buy one.

Width of Running Surface

The width of the running surface plays a key role in the device’s stability during your workout. A wider surface requires less stabilization from you. For beginners, it’s a good idea to go for a slightly wider model.

But if you don’t want to shell out more cash for another device with a narrower surface later, it’s best to choose an AB roller with a surface that’s neither too wide nor too narrow.

Number of Wheels

The wheel count significantly impacts the AB roller’s stability. Generally, more wheels make it easier to stabilize.

However, wheel spacing and shape are also important factors. Some AB rollers have wheels spaced several centimeters apart, while others have wheels closer together with minimal distance between them. Plus, the edges might be rounded outward, reducing the contact surface.

Load-Bearing Capacity

Load-bearing capacity ultimately affects the device’s stability. Insufficient capacity could cause problems down the line.

Sadly, not all manufacturers provide info on the AB roller’s maximum load-bearing capacity. It’s recommended to research the maximum user weight and load capacity before buying. Having more load-bearing capacity is always a plus.

Material

Ideally, the handles and rollers should be slip-resistant. It’s crucial that the AB roller actually rolls instead of just sliding across the floor, and that the handles offer a secure grip for safe workouts.

Of course, the unseen material is also important. The wheel must be securely attached to the roller and shouldn’t squeak, as that can quickly take the fun out of exercising.
